The Indian Police System is Broken and how to fix it….
Although an important part of society, police generally have an overall negative image in most parts of the world….
The reasons behind this lie behind some fundamentally broken parts of the police system. Let us look into them….
Becoming police is easy….
Getting into the police force is mostly based on physical tests with no focus on intelligence and altruistic personality….
Most police join the force as their best employment opportunity and not because they aspired to be in the force or serve the community….
Corruption….
A good portion of the force becomes police to take advantage of the power and fatten their wallets through bribes….
There is no efficient system to tackle and prevent corruption inside the police system….
Political pet….
The police force is often used as pet goons by political leaders in power to attack oppositions and silence questions….
Unless these fundamentally broken parts of the system are fixed, cases of police brutality will keep popping up….
Not comfortable with the last set of pictures…?
Let’s look at a different set of pictures….
.
These are some of the Bollywood blockbusters that glorify rogue cops misusing power and dropping dead bodies….
The more we glorify them, the more Jayaraj and Bennix happens….

Although a utopian society where we don’t need the police force is seductive, we ain’t there yet.
Even with all the negative aspects, police serve an important role in society. So, we need to fix it. Let’s look at some ways to do that.
1. Make it harder to be one.
The harder we make it to get into the police force, the better candidates get into it. This filters out lotta incompetent officers.
2. Give importance to mentality and motive in the selection process
Unless we filter out candidates joining the force for selfish motives, we won’t get a force focused on serving the public.
3. And finally, introduce an independent regulatory body to tackle corruption.
Although they sound simple, these steps are hard to implement. But we can get there as long as we start the process of implementing them.
