Definition:

the practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs….

With the recent tragic demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, the case of nepotism in Bollywood has come to the spotlight with a lot of heat….

Let us look into some of the problems associated with nepotism….

It blocks new talent….

With the positions pre-booked, it becomes much harder for new talents to enter the field creating an unjust monopoly….

It often promotes lesser talent….

With the positions of importance pre-occupied for a few, whether those few have enough talent to deserve it becomes secondary and often not the case….

Under the current trend of bashing on nepotism, we are completely ignoring how common nepotism is and why it comes naturally to us….

Firstly Bollywood ain’t the only place where nepotism exists. Karan Johar might be the flag bearer of nepotism in the film industry, there are people more powerful than him outside it practicing it in the open….

For example, Amit Shar placed his son Jay Shah as the secretary of BCCI with pretty much no experience in cricket….

Nepotism comes naturally to humans because we are social beings who maintain our familiar ties till death….

We as parents try to make it easier for our kids while we as children often expect unfair advantage through our parents….

We spend our lives developing material assets and influential ties so that we can pass them on to our next generation….

Nepotism exists because it’s simply a modern form of our basic instinct of “survival of the fittest”. It is a form of our legacy that makes the survival of our next generation more favourable….

In case you don’t know, Sushant or SSR was a young Bollywood celebrity actor who’s recent tragic demise has put the “nepotism debate” on the forefront surpassing the COVID-19 pandemic in media and public attention….

Besides being a talented actor, he was a good-natured intelligent human being and his views on nepotism are much more matured than the media attention. Let us look at it….

“Nepotism is there. It’s there and it’s everywhere, not just in Bollywood…. You can’t do anything about it…. Nepotism can coexist and nothing will happen…. But…. At the same time, if you deliberately don’t allow the right talents to come up…. Then there’s a problem…. Then the whole structure of the industry would collapse one day…. Till then, it’s fine. Nepotism can co-exist with all the talented people and you’ll get wonderful films because it’ll raise the performance….

The world needs more intelligent and sensible down to earth celebrities like him…. Dear Sushant, you shall be remembered….
