Making popular fast food joint to switch from Plastic to Paper Straws

Recently, in the last week of March, I visited an outlet of Biggies Burgers. Biggies is an Indian fast food joint franchise mainly focused on burgers. And they do make great burgers. I placed my orders and soon received them…. But I noticed something disappointing. The mojito I ordered had a plastic straw placed in it….

This was disappointing because of 3 reasons:

  1. Paper straws are easily available.
  2. Although more expensive than plastic straws, paper straws are very cheap. And a popular fast food outlet can definitely afford them.
  3. I wasn’t given an option to opt-out of the straw.

So, I decided to get their attention about the issue politely. I figured there are two best places to do so. I made a tweet with a photo I took of the mojito with a plastic straw. And I posted an Instagram story of the same. I tagged Biggies in both cases and expressed my concern in a polite and genuine tone….

One of them worked and I got a quick response to my Instagram story. Someone handling their Instagram checked with me to know which outlet it was. I gave them the details and they assured a solution. I was happy with this and decided to check on it later….

One week later, I had my driving test and figured it was a good time to check on their progress. I placed my orders and made sure to include a mojito. And to my satisfaction, it had a paper straw in it. So, my operation was successful. Some credit goes to Biggies for being so cooperative….

I did pass the driving test and get my driving license by the way….

The Lesson

Now, if you are wondering about why this video, it’s to make a point. The point is, if you find something that’s wrong and is bothering you, don’t just sit back and feel bad. Do something about it, it just might work. The best way to do so is to solve the problem yourself. But sometimes, you don’t the power and resources to do so. In that case, the best path is to complain. But you gotta complain to the right people in the right way. For example, in my case, I’m a small content creator. I didn’t have the power to solve the issue myself. And Biggies wouldn’t have noticed my concern if I didn’t tag them in the Instagram story. If instead of expressing my concern politely, I would’ve run a smear campaign using foul language, Biggies wouldn’t be happy to cooperate. And if I didn’t help them out with the information they needed and just yelled at them, they wouldn’t be able to solve the issue. Also, if instead of taking to social media I took the issue to the management of the outlet I visited, the issue probably would’ve been neglected since they wouldn’t have any incentive to correct it. Taking it to social media meant getting the attention of higher-up management who could instruct the outlet under them to resolve the issue in order to maintain their social image. And for that, I’m grateful to them….

So hooms, be better, have a sustainable lifestyle and help others to do the same….
